About the Division of Global Affairs (DGA)
The Division of Global Affairs (DGA) is an educational institution of the Graduate School of Rutgers University–Newark. DGA offers a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Global Affairs. The graduate program provides interdisciplinary training that prepares students to address the practical global challenges of the 21st Century. DGA’s research and teaching excellence is drawn from the expertise of a distinguished faculty from a variety of disciplines. The Academic Analytics Benchmarking Academic Excellence survey of International Affairs and Development programs recently ranked DGA’s Ph.D. program fifth in the nation. The National Faculty Productivity Index ranked Rutgers-Newark 12th in the nation for quality among small research universities. As a multi-faceted institution, DGA is RU-Newark’s outreach arm to organizations with global concerns. The Rutgers Center for the Study of Emergent Threats in the 21st Century (ET21) is DGA’s official research arm.

The Division of Global Affairs (DGA) at Rutgers University-Newark is deeply rooted in New Jersey, a densely populated, diverse, and complex state that is a microcosm of the 21st-century. As such, it is in a position to be at the vanguard of world issues. DGA has become a vital participant in the educational and professional life of the New York metropolitan area, northern New Jersey, and the City of Newark. DGA's outreach to the region's many constituencies and communities—as well as its contribution to the Newark renaissance—builds on its commitment to education and service.

Central to DGA’s focus, is the relationship between globalization and the dynamic role of governments, international and regional organizations, corporations, NGOs and civil society. Within this framework, DGA endeavors to impart knowledge to address the practical global challenges of the 21st Century by examining large-scale social, political, economic and cultural transformations and their relationship to the changing dynamics of states and non-state actors.
Academic Excellence and Distinction
The Benchmarking Academic Excellence Survey of Top Universities in Social and Behavioral Sciences Disciplines (2006-2007) ranked the Ph.D program at DGA fifth in the nation in the combined category of International Affairs and Development. Study Abroad: DGA-Kassel University Exchange Program
The DGA has a faculty and student exchange program with Kassel University, located in Kassel, Germany.
The DGA-Kassel Exchange Program offers courses in global affairs, international political economy, and environment. Courses are taught in English. Credits completed at Kassel may be transferred into the DGA M.S. or Ph.D. programs in accordance with the guidelines on transfer credits. Tuition at Kassel is free for DGA students. DGA students must cover room and board and transportation costs. Rutgers University offers over thirty study abroad programs that DGA students can explore.
There are over thirty programs to choose from in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Pacific including a number of activism and advocacy learning opportunities.
