2017 Colloquium Series - "The Case for Empowerment Spaces for Muslim Women"

The Rutgers Division of Global Affairs and the Student Association of Global Affairs organize a weekly global affairs colloquium with internationally active experts and practitioners. Join us on April 19 when Rana Abdelhamid, Founding President of WISE, will talk about “The Case for Empowerment Spaces for Muslim Women” The talk will take place from 2:30 – 4:30 pm in the Dana Room, Dana Library (4th Floor).
 
Rana Abdelhamid has organized around human rights issues with Amnesty International USA for the past eight years on campaigns related to women’s rights, torture and the Arab Spring. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Amnesty International USA, has served on the National Youth Action Committee and was the Youth Delegate to Amnesty’s 2015 International Council Meeting. Rana is a recipient of the UNAUSA Leo Nevas Human Rights Youth Award, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship and the Running Start Rising Political Star Award. Moreover, she was recently named one of BBC's 2016 Top 100 Women.
 
Rana is the Founding President of the Women's Initiative for Self Empowerment (WISE), a self-defense, leadership and entrepreneurship program for young Muslim women in New York City. Over the past six years, WISE has engaged hundreds of participants through programs in across the US, Europe and most recently, the Middle East. As such, Rana has been featured in the Huffington Post, Elle.com, Mic.com, CBS and PBS. She has conducted extensive political science and economics research on the inclusion of Muslim minority communities in New York City and Madrid and is currently a second year Masters in Public Policy student at the Harvard Kennedy School where she is involved with the Muslim Caucus, the Harvard iLab Program and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
